On September 22, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council issued the "Guidelines for Building a Powerful Country with Intellectual Property Rights (2021-2035)". The goal is that by 2025, the added value of patent-intensive industries will account for 13% of GDP. Among the 2020 China's Top 500 Patent Powers recently put on the list, China's display panel industry duo BOE and TCL China Star have both ranked in the top ten, ranking third and seventh respectively.
In the past ten years, China's display panel industry has gone from catching up to surpassing in the field of LCD panels. In the first half of 2021, the LCD panel shipment area of three Chinese companies, BOE, TCL Huaxing, and Huike, has accounted for 50.9% of the world's total LCD panel shipments, which is more than half for the first time. At present, Chinese panel companies are also catching up with new display technologies such as flexible OLED and Mini/Micro LED (MLED).
While striving to increase production capacity and market share, Chinese panel makers also focus on technology investment and accumulation. They have active technology and patent layouts in LCD and flexible OLED technologies. The next 3 to 5 years will be a parallel development stage of multiple technologies, but in the long run, a certain technology will surely stand out and become the mainstream of next-generation display technologies in terms of product performance, cost price and consumer awareness. In this process, Chinese panel companies need to continue to research and strive to become a leading force at the next technological turning point.
